The past month has been a gratifying time for me. After running CIM a few weeks back, I was able to rest, relax, and mentally recharge. It gave me time to focus on others, contemplate goals, and enjoy the little things that happen around the holidays. This Christmas, I am especially thankful for family, friends, and to all of those who contribute in various ways to making my life what it is. Here’s a little update on life and what I’ve been doing…
Holiday Parties // I absolutely love getting dressed up and can go from the typical sweaty workout attire to holiday glam in a matter of hours. Justin and I have been to a couple holiday parties this year, and will attend one more on NYE. It’s been fun to add a little sparkle and excitement to our lives!
Football // The Seahawks are on a roll and have clinched a spot in the playoffs. Now, if they can only win this weekend, we will have a bye week and home field advantage, which would be fantastic. Oh, and I took first place in my fantasy football league. All because of Odell Beckham Jr. and Beast Mode. I guess I’ll have to make room for one more trophy, this one with my name engraved on it…that’s Kristen with an e.
Movies // I love going to the movies and it seems that during this time of year the movie options are endless. So far we have seen Wild, Exodus, Hunger Games, Interstellar, and The Imitation Game. All were excellent and worth the trip to the theater, particularly The Imitation Game. Wild was primarily filmed around Central Oregon, so it was fun to see familiar landmarks, scenery, and people we know who play extras in the film. Justin and I sure do know how to rock the 3D glasses!
Training // I am currently in a state of “off-season” but all is about to change in January. After meeting with my coach for a few hours and setting some new goals, I will be in full training mode once 1/1/15 arrives. In the meantime, I am getting reacquainted with the bike and pool.
Swim: Yesterday, I got back into the pool for the FIRST time since Ironman 70.3 Lake Stevens. It was ugly and my arms, back, and core are all very sore, but now that I have broken the ice I plan on frequenting the pool several times a week.
Bike: When I met with my coach earlier this week, he let me know that I would be doing an FTP test on Friday. I like how he decides these things for me, no ifs ands or buts about it. Justin helped me prep the bike and set up the trainer, and I did my first ride since September. It was easy and enjoyable. I am always happy to be on my bike. This year it looks like I am going to be racing with an awesome set-up and POWER!
Run: I have done two runs since CIM. It’s all been fun and relaxing, as running in the off-season should be. To celebrate my friend Rainie’s birthday, we took advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and did a 6.5-mile loop around Shevlin Park. It was rejuvenating!
Vacation Planning // After our trip to Africa early last year, Justin and I decided to hold off on some of our travel plans until he was fully recovered from his spring and fall foot surgeries. Thus far we have a trip to Hawaii planned for February, New York City in late March/early April, Isla Holbox on the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula in May (Christmas surprise), and Whistler in July for Ironman Canada.
Play // Off-season = A LOT of play. With no work until January 5, no schedule, and no big travel plans, Justin and I have been living life spontaneously on the edge. No, not really, but it’s easier to go and do things without much forewarning. I was actually sick for a week post-marathon, so I spent a lot of time curled up in blankets watching movies and enjoying the downtime.
Justin and I did get a chance to get out and enjoy the fresh new snow that fell yesterday, making an adventure of it. I always wish for a white Christmas and this year that wish came true! I get really happy when it snows.
I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and wonderful day with family and friends. We spent the morning listening to Christmas music, opening presents, and talking over the phone with family in Washington and South Carolina. This afternoon we are heading over to my mom’s house for Christmas dinner and games. Oh the little things that bring so much magic and joy.
Hugs and happiness to all of you!!!
